Zusammenfassung

Der englische Begriff „Hub“ (Drehkreuz) wird gelegentlich im Deutschen auch als Abkürzung für „Hauptumschlagsbasis“ benutzt. Hub-Systeme ähneln als radiale Transportnetze „topographisch“ den Zentrallagerkonzepten und Cross-Docking-Modellen des Handels. Beiden gemeinsam ist die kontraintuitive Idee, Sendungen für eine bessere Kapazitätsauslastung Umwege machen zu lassen. Einer der Pioniere dieser Systemarchitektur war das oben schon erwähnte, luftfrachtbasierte Expressfrachtunternehmen Federal Express mit seinem Zentral-Hub in Memphis/USA. Eine erste Beschreibung von „Nabe-Speiche-Systemen“ im deutschsprachigen Raum findet sich schon bei Klaus (1987). Im Bereich der Stückgutspeditionen wurde diese Innovation hier erst mit einer Verzögerung von mehreren Jahren aufgegriffen und umgesetzt, zählt aber heute zum allgemein praktizierten „State-of-the-Art“ der Branche. Man kann in ihr die „Arche Noah“ des Mittelstands sehen.
