About this book

This revised, new edition retains its class-tested coverage of how metals behave in water while updating and expanding information about metals processing methods. The book further retains its emphasis on predicting and engineering the way metals are extracted from ore sources, separated from unwanted entities, recovered as metals, and purified using water based processing. The transformation of minerals to metals requires hydrometallurgical processing for nearly all of the nonferrous metals we use. This book elucidates the associated fundamentals and processing applications as well as related tools to assess processes and performance. The new edition further includes additional photographs, updated drawings, supplementary data, updated descriptive information, and new detail on rare earth elements processing as well as recycling and byproduct recovery of metals.

Table of Contents

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
Metals are needed for survival. Our bodies rely on metal to perform many vital functions. Iron is used to transport oxygen to cells. Calcium is needed for bones.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 2. Chemical Fundamentals of Hydrometallurgy
Abstract
Metals and minerals interact with other species in aqueous media. Reactions involving metals and other species can be classified. Reaction classifications include precipitation, hydrolysis, electrochemical, conversion, complexation, solvation, and ionic disassociation.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 3. Speciation and Phase Diagrams
Abstract
Speciation diagrams are useful in determining the effects of conditions on the distribution of species. For example in the sulfate/water system it is useful to know the available sulfate ion concentration as a function of pH.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 4. Rate Processes
Abstract
Key Learning Objectives and Outcomes.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 5. Metal Extraction
Abstract
Key Learning Objectives and Outcomes.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 6. Separation of Dissolved Metals
Abstract
Metals dissolved by extraction or leaching need to be separated in order to obtain purified products.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 7. Metal Recovery Processes
Abstract
Electrowinning is the electrolytic process of “winning” or recovering dissolved metal using an applied potential.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 8. Metal Utilization
Abstract
Metals can be manufactured and are often utilized in aqueous media. Metals are commonly used in non rechargeable alkaline batteries.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 9. Environmental Issues
Abstract
Over the past few decades, the public awareness of environmental issues has played a dramatic role in shaping environmental law.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 10. Process Design Principles
Abstract
A variety of factors need to be considered carefully before designing industrial processes. Sometimes small process details have significant consequences if they are not properly included in the design of a process.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 11. General Engineering Economics
Abstract
Money is an important commodity in modern society. Money is a measure of value. Items that are purchased at a store require effort and resources to produce them. Employees demand compensation for their time and effort in the form of money. Employees’ efforts are rewarded based on the value they provide. The value they provide is related to the time they work and the skills they have acquired.
Michael L. Free
Chapter 12. General Engineering Statistics
Abstract
Key Chapter Learning Objectives and Outcomes: Know how to evaluate measurement error and uncertainty. Understand how to use the correct number significant figures. Know how to calculate basic statistical terms.
