Scandinavia’s North Atlantic outpost was first settled in 874. According to the Landnámabók or ‘book of settlements’, the first to land was Ingólfi Arnarson, who came from Norway to live on the site of present-day Reykjavik. He was followed by some 400 migrants, mainly from Norway but also from other Nordic countries and from Norse settlements in the British Isles.
