Influence of Low Temperature on the Surface and Morphological Properties of Hydrated Lime in SO2 Desulfurization Reaction

Abstract

In aluminum production, the use of carbon anodes leads to the sulfur dioxide emissions which have adverse effects on health and environment. In this work, hydrated lime Ca(OH)2 was used to remove the low concentration of SO2 gas through a semi-dry desulfurization process. The reaction was carried out under dry and humid conditions, and the reaction at low temperature was studied. The results indicated that the humidity plays a key role in the reaction between hydrated lime and SO2. The morphological analysis and surface area results showed that the lime samples have significant changes in their topological and surface properties, which influences the amount of SO2 capture. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results complement those of the chemical changes due to the influence of low reaction temperature on the surface of hydrated lime. In this article, the results are presented which demonstrate the impact of various factors at low temperature.
