Abstract

The wide representation of real communities in the virtual space of online social networks opens new opportunities for sociological research. The focus is on possible methods for communities monitoring using the data of online social networks. The main research question is whether it is possible to investigate the real territorial characteristics of communities on the basis of their representations in a virtual environment? How accurately does the information received from the virtual space reflect the real territorial aspects of the chosen community? The article provides an overview of possible methods for assessing, analyzing, forecasting and monitoring the territorial characteristics of communities based on their representations in a virtual environment. The virtual environment in this study is the social networking service “VKontakte” popular in Russia. An example of using the developed software tool to analyze the communities’ territoriality based on “VKontakte” is given.
