Abstract

The integration of technological elements into textile products and fashion accessories is clearly not a new phenomena. But after more than two decades since its boom, it is important to look at the progress made, the applicability, the market availability of the technologies, their consequent acceptance or refusal by consumers and the future prospects for these products. The present study presents a review on the subject, focusing on the relationship between science and design, in particular the fusion between technology and fashion.
The findings of the study indicate that the future market is amenable to this type of products. However, there is a need to focus on the creation of a new profile of fashion designer, with the skills to support innovative decision making in sourcing and selection of suitable materials, technologies and construction methods for the development of functional garments, which also meet the end user’s demand, needs and cultural contexts. In this sense, the use of alternative design methodologies, in particular fiction design and working with transdisciplinary design teams can enhance the success in the creation of innovative fashion products.
