Mazda will begin a joint research project with Saudi Aramco, the Saudi Arabian state-owned oil company, and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) aimed at creating a low-carbon fuel and effectively reducing CO2 emissions on a well-to-wheel basis.
According to forecasts, combustion engines will still remain in use for decades. Within this project, Saudi Aramco will develop a fuel based on a refinery process that results in lower carbon dioxide emissions. Mazda and the AIST are developing an engine that can use this fuel. The research project is in line with the company's 'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030' vision.
