A bold approach is taken in Montréal for the third and final ‘official’ conference of the International Polar Year 2007–2008 (IPY) by adopting the theme “From Knowledge to Action” (http://​www.​ipy2012montreal.​ca/​). On the ‘Knowledge’ side of the equation, some large fraction of knowledge from this IPY remains undisclosed and perhaps even undiscovered. On the ‘Action’ side, actions such as polar-focused conservation or adaptation actions by Arctic communities await the slow cycle of consensus and prediction leading to political response. This conference can be understood as a call, to science at least, to accelerate the knowledge-to-action process. …
