The rapid industrialisation has lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty, but also has put significant pressure on work conditions, exacerbating the lax workplace oversight. Even in the recent years (2010–2014), the total death toll arising from workplace accidents remains still as high as around 70,000 and the standardised incidence rates remains higher than 1.0, although there is a downward trend over the period observed. The specific figures are to be found in: National Economic and Social Development Statistical Communiqués provided by National Bureau of Statistics of China, in the years between 2010 and 2014. The 2010 version is available at: http://www.stats.gov.cn/tjsj/tjgb/ndtjgb/qgndtjgb/201102/t20110228_30025.html, [accessed 01.02.2020]; The 2011 version: http://www.stats.gov.cn/tjsj/tjgb/ndtjgb/qgndtjgb/201202/t20120222_30026.html, [accessed 01.02.2020];
