Not, this time, in the person of Lady Philosophy, visiting Boethius in his prison in Pavia: instead, it is MIT’s Kieran Setiya who steps forward to advocate the consolations of philosophy. He gives us one chapter on each of those six ills, and then concludes with a chapter on hope, which, as he points out, can also be added to the list: hope, too, is placed by Hesiod among the evils in Pandora’s box. …
