Philosophers and political theorists with liberal democratic commitments tend to approach the topic of civil disobedience cautiously. They want to honor critique, dissent and individual conscience, but are hesitant about conscientious law-breaking. They worry in particular about a breakdown in respect for the rule of law and democratic decision-making. Concessions to civil disobedience they tend to hedge about with inhibiting conditions, such as an insistence that it be non-violent or require an acceptance of legal punishment. …
