14. Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis als Standbein der Nachhaltigkeitsforschung: Projektbeispiel zukunftsfähige Nahrungssysteme

Zusammenfassung

Armut gilt als eine der Hauptursachen für Hunger und Mangelernährung in den Ländern des globalen Südens und immer noch gelten über 800 Mio. Menschen und mehr als 160 Mio. Kinder als chronisch unterernährt (Marke 2014, S. 14); 75 % der 1,4 Mrd. von extremer Armut betroffenen Menschen leben in ländlichen Gebieten und zwei Drittel sind Kleinbauern (IFAD und UNEP 2013, S. 8). Durch diese Zahlen wird deutlich, dass bei der Bekämpfung des Hungers, der ländlichen Armut sowie beim Schutz der natürlichen Ressourcen nachhaltige Nahrungsmittelproduktion auf kleinbäuerlicher Ebene eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Weltweit wirtschaften kleinbäuerliche Produzenten auf 550 Mio. Landwirtschaftsbetrieben mit steigender Tendenz (Campbell und Thornton 2014, S. 2). Der Großteil der Arbeit wird dabei durch kleinteilig wirtschaftende Familienarbeitskräfte erledigt, i. d. R. auf weniger als zwei Hektar landwirtschaftlicher Nutzfläche, wodurch weltweit rund 80 % der Nahrungsmittel produziert werden (FAO 2014, S. 10). Die arbeitsintensive Produktion nutzt noch zu einem Viertel menschliche Energie. Der Anteil der Fläche in Subsahara‐Afrika, der mit der Handhacke bearbeitet wird, liegt sogar bei 71 % (Bennetzen et al. 2016, S. 53). Aufgrund der Abgelegenheit vieler ländlicher Regionen sind die soziale und technische Infrastruktur sowie die Anbindung an Märkte und Geld‐ und Kreditsysteme oft unzureichend.
