The advantage that light-emitting diodes or LEDs have over conventional bulbs is that they produce their full light output within less than 1 ms, as the authors and the editor Konrad Reif explain in their Springer-Vieweg book on the fundamentals of automotive engineering. Bulbs take almost 200 times as long to illuminate fully. This means that the LEDs in a brake light can light up more quickly, which shortens the response time of the driver in the following car and improves road safety. …
