About this book

The digital transformation of the business environment and its impact on firm performance is of central interest in economics and management. However, it is still an open question how firms should optimally align their business models and strategies for the digital era. Daniel Wittenstein investigates this question by generating novel insights from hidden champions and by developing a machine learning-based approach for measuring firm-level digitalization.

Chapter 1. Miracle or Myth?
A Panel Analysis of Hidden Champion Performance
Abstract
In 2018, Germany’s exports grew for the fifth consecutive year and reached another record high of over 1.3 billion Euros, a number only being exceeded by the US and China (Statista 2020f). In terms of exports per capita, however, no other large economy shows comparable export figures (Simon 2018). Experts often attribute this outstanding performance to Germany’s high number of distinguished small and mid-size firms, commonly termed as the ‘Mittelstand’.

Chapter 2. Champions of Digital Transformation?
The Dynamic Capabilities of Hidden Champions
Abstract
Since the beginning of the century, advances in computation power and a global access to the Internet have accelerated the digitalization of the business environment. This digital transformation increasingly affects firm strategies, fosters innovation, and creates entirely new business models (Rogers 2016). Studies show that already the digitization of formerly analogous organizational processes can significantly increase efficiency and flexibility within organizations (Markovitch & Willmott 2014; Isaksson et al. 2018).

Chapter 3. Measuring Firm-Level Digitalization
An Explorative Investigation via Website Data
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic strikingly demonstrates the advantages of digitalization. To contain the spreading of the virus, many countries have taken severe actions and imposed restrictions that affected large parts of the analogue world. This had severe implications for the global economy, especially for businesses that relied on personal customer contact.
