Matthew Goodwin recognises, and seeks to explain, the change, and apparent fragmentation, of recent British politics. As he points out, it is often explained by recent events, the rise of populism and Nigel Farage, the Brexit vote, the electoral success of Boris Johnson and the collapse of Labour in 2019. But he argues that these real realignments of politics are the outcome of longer-term trends, since at least the 1980s, affecting not only Britain but much of Western Europe and the USA, disrupting old political allegiances, which he seeks to understand. …
