Modelling and Design of the Cathode Block Assembly Using Different Types of Models

Abstract

In the push to improve key performance indicators (KPIs) of existing smelters, Hall-Héroult cell retrofits projects are getting very popular especially in China. The cathode assembly is a prime candidate for redesign as it is possible to reduce the cathode voltage drop (CVD) and the metal pad horizontal current at the same time leading to a reduction of the cell energy consumption. A new cathode assembly design concept developed by Elkem is being investigated in the current work using three types of complimentary models. The results are presented and compared in this paper.
