Robust optimization is an often-used method to deal with uncertainty in the input data to practical optimization problems. In the case of long-term infrastructure network design, it is commonly used to obtain a final network configuration which is suitable for different future traffic scenarios. Predictions of traffic patterns are typically based on past observations from which probabilistic assumptions on the future development are derived via statistic methods.
