BMW Motorrad has unveiled an autonomous BMW R 1200 GS at its Motorrad Techday. However, the company does not aim to mass produce a fully automated motorcycle.

At the BMW Group's Miramas test track in southern France, BMW Motorrad presented its autonomously driving R 1200 GS model. The networked bike is capable of automatic starting, accelerating, circumnavigating the winding test track and performing a full brake — all without the need for human intervention. The prototype was developed by graduate engineer Stefan Hans and his team.

It is not the purpose of this new technology, however, to develop a fully autonomous motorbike, BMW has emphasized. The data gained will be used for the purpose of advancing future systems and functions that will make motorcycles safer and more comfortable, while simultaneously increasing riding pleasure. Through this, future assistance systems could detect potentially hazardous situations earlier and provide the rider with better support, for example when turning at intersections or braking suddenly.

The autonomous R 1200 GS has a range of additional technical features, such as the laser headlights with cornering lighting, the 3D printed motorcycle frame including rear swingarm, as well as the carbon chassis components such as frame, swingarm and wheels.
