Secondly, in order to discuss these influences in a precise context, a few key results will be stated and "proved". This will be done in an almost selfcontained manner in the spirit of the call for this symposium which announced that the lectures would be pedagogical. The definitions and statements should help to set the stage for some of the papers to follow by providing a formal framework.
