Novel hydrogels containing nanosilver for biomedical applications - synthesis and characterization

Abstract

In this article, a series of hydrogels containing nanosilver has been synthesized by a unique methodology, which involves formation of silver nanoparticles within PAA/PEG hydrogels under microwave irradiation. Sodium citrate was then used to reduce the silver ion (Ag+) to the metallic silver nanoparticles (Ag0) which were characterized by dynamic light scattering and X-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles, with diameter of about 10 nm, were anchored onto the polymer network. The effect of polymerization conditions on swelling capacity was studied; the results showed that the swelling capacity was considerably affected by concentration of the nanosilver in polymer matrix.
