Abstract

Alpersite, (Mg,Cu)SO7H2O, a metal hydrosulfate secondary mineral, is identified along a creek carrying copper plant effluent near Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit, India. Alpersite occurs in the form of efflorescent salt and exhibits a typical blue color and prismatic habit. It is associated with other efflorescent salts consisting of epsomite, hexahydrite and gypsum. This paper reports the first occurrence of alpersite in India. Alpersite is found to precipitate from water at pH 6.2. Alpersite has shown high retention capacity of Mn, Zn and Ni; however, 92–98 % of total elements are found to be associated with the exchangeable part.
