Abstract

The fruits of this palm resemble its close cousin Oenocarpus bacaba, but the palms can be easily distinguished because the fronds of Oenocarpus distichus splay out in a single plane on either side. Although both species are found in some home gardens, they generally have separate distributions with O. distichus occurring in eastern and southern Amazonia. The palm is typically spared when clearing forest to create cattle pasture or to plant crops, and the seeds are also sown in fields and home gardens. The fruits are used to make a juice which is often mixed with manioc flour to form a rich and highly nutritious porridge.
