Optimization of Structural Damage Detection Planning for Civil Infrastructure

Abstract

This paper presents an approach for optimum structural damage detection planning under uncertainty. The uncertainties associated with damage occurrence, propagation and inspection are considered in the proposed approach. Optimum damage detection plan is a solution of a bi-objective optimization under uncertainty consisting in simultaneously minimizing the damage detection delay and the total inspection cost. The Pareto solution associated with optimum damage detection planning under uncertainty provides the optimum type of inspections and inspection times. The proposed approach can be applied to a wide rang of civil infrastructure systems under various deterioration mechanisms including corrosion and fatigue.
