Abstract

How the relationship between firms’ productivity and self-selection into global value chains (GVCs) changes in different local business environments is largely unexplored. Using longitudinal data of 8,326 firms in Vietnam, the study shows that productivity positively affects firms’ integration into GVCs in a low-quality local business environment but not in a high-quality one. The local business environment is significant among the small- and medium-sized and privately-owned firms but not observed among large and non-private firms. These findings suggest that improving the business environment is important to support the integration into GVCs of small and private firms in transition economies.
