Vodafone and Continental are joining forces to increase road traffic safety through intelligent and networked vehicles. The partners have therefore started working on concrete scenarios of application in Vodafone’s 5G Mobility Lab. The focus is on a digital protective shield for pedestrians and cyclists as well as a networked traffic jam alert. The applications are being implemented using 5G, cellular vehicle-to-everything (cellular V-to-X) and mobile edge computing. When traffic participants provide mutual warnings, it is crucial that information is exchanged practically in real-time. 5G will enable bandwidths of up to 10 Gbit per second and will allow millions of vehicles to communicate with each other simultaneously. The networked traffic jam alert is intended to enable the affected vehicles to directly communicate with all traffic participants in proximity via cellular V-to-X, via cellular networks and via direct communication. This would enable vehicles which are still some distance away to be directed in real-time towards alternative routes.
