The plug-in hybrid drive of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe combines two electric motors with a turbo petrol engine. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be released at the beginning of 2021.

From 2021, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe will join the model range of this American off-road vehicle. The Wrangler 4xe's powertrain combines two electric motors and a high-voltage battery with a turbo four-cylinder petrol engine. It has a system output of 276 kW (375 HP) and provides 637 Nm of maximum torque. Power is transmitted by a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic gearbox with a converter.

The 2.0-litre direct-injection engine is part of the FCA's Global Medium Engine family and works with a twin-scroll turbocharger. A belt generator replaces the alternator and starter motor, and the second electric motor is mounted at the front of the gearbox, replacing the hydraulic torque converter in a conventional automatic gearbox. Two clutches control the power and torque from the electric motor and the engine.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe can travel up to 40 km on electric power

The lithium-ion 96-cell battery pack is fitted beneath the rear bench. The 400-volt battery provides 17 kWh of energy and employs graphite chemistry using nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC). This enables the Wrangler 4xe to travel up to 40 km on electric power alone according to US homologation. Three driving modes are available: Hybrid, Electric and eSave. All high-voltage electronics are sealed, meaning the hybrid Wrangler can drive through water that is up to 76 cm deep.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is available in the 4xe, Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe models. The Wrangler 4xe and Wrangler Sahara 4xe are fitted with an automatic all-wheel drive and Dana 44 axles at the front and rear and are equipped with the two-speed Selec-Trac transfer case with a low-range gear ratio of 1:2.72. A Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential is optionally available. The Rubicon features the Rock-Trac 4x4 system, which includes a two-speed transfer case with a 1:4 low-range gear ratio, an automatic four-wheel drive, Dana 44 axles and Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle locks.
