Given the importance of oil in the economy, political issues are bound to arise. These vary from taxation to operating policy to planning for the future. But the role of the oil industry is different in each country, so the nature of these political interactions varies enormously.

The seven: Exxon (Standard of New Jersey), Mobil (Standard of New York), Standard of California (Chevron), Texaco, Gulf, BP and Shell. Today there are but four: Exxon and Mobil have merged into a single company and Chevron has absorbed Texaco and Gulf.

The Iranians are not Arabs, and the Arabs are not Iranians; each feels strongly about this. Thus ‘Persian Gulf’ and ‘Arabian Gulf’ are both unacceptable names for this body of water. So it is simply “the Gulf.” But note, this Gulf is not to be confused with the Gulf of Mexico, which is the center of the US oil industry and which is also called ‘the Gulf’ when discussing US issues.
