Eduard Zehnder tells the story of the beginnings of symplectic topology in Bochum in the early eighties. He outlines the history and the original proof of Arnold’s conjecture on fixed points of Hamiltonian maps in case of the torus, leading to a sketch of the proof of general symplectic manifolds and to the Floer homology. This review of contemporary history will be followed by a longer review article about Floer homologies with applications by Alberto Abbondandolo and Felix Schlenk which will appear in the next issue of this journal. …
