David Tabor, who died aged 92 on 25th November 2005, was arguably the most influential tribologist of the second half of the twentieth Century. During the second world war he worked with Philip Bowden in CSIRO Melbourne, Australia in a laboratory devoted to the study of the physics of friction, which they designated Tribophysics. In 1946 they returned to Cambridge, UK, to found the laboratory that came to be named: Physics and Chemistry of Solids (PCS). The work of the laboratory up to the 1960s is summarised in their famous books: The Friction and Lubrication of Solids, Oxford (1954, 1964). Tabor took over running the laboratory after Bowden’s death in 1968 until his official retirement in 1981, although he continued as a very active member. …
