Abstract

The accessibility of clean and fresh water is a major requirement for the survival and societal development of humans. Photocatalysis is an artificial photosynthesis technique that uses green, sustainable chemistry to solve energy and environmental issues. There is now great demand for a low-cost, high-performance device to treat wastewater. The role of nanotechnology in field water purification has significantly advanced by altering the shape, size, and properties of nanomaterials. This chapter outlines recent developments in green photo-active nanostructures, which includes metals, metal oxides, metal-doped metal-oxides, and plasmonic photocatalytic materials in water splitting. The differences in photosynthesis and photocatalysis energy concepts, as well as an emerging heterogeneous photocatalyst-based z-scheme approach, are also discussed in detail.
