Mercedes-Benz has launched the X-Class in South Africa. The pickup is entering the market with two four-cylinder engines to choose from. The common-rail diesel drive system with a displacement of 2.3 l is available with a choice of two power outputs: the X 220 d with a single turbocharger generates 120 kW, as opposed to 140 kW for the biturbo X 250 d. The gasoline engine in the X 200 delivers 122 kW. The biturbo engine in the X 250 d has two turbochargers of different size that compress the intake air individually or collectively depending on the engine speed. The aim is to provide high torque at low engine speeds and greater performance in the high engine speed range. Both diesel versions are also available with rear-wheel drive as well as engageable four-wheel drive. A seven-speed automatic transmission is available on request for the 140-kW X 250 d and X 250 d 4Matic models and six-speed manual transmission comes as standard.
