Abstract
GEOMORPHIC SETTING: The Cumberland River stretches for almost 700 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee including lands with some of the greatest biodiversity in the USA. The river exhibits a highly sinuous pattern, with steep banks and little effective floodplain due to inundation from a nearly continuous series of large dams built primarily for navigation purposes. The river itself has been subjected to many modifications, as well as urban development and ensuing suburban sprawl throughout much of the watershed. Heavy barge traffic is common on the highly managed river that features locks and dams. Soils mainly consist of heavily weathered clays.
