Abstract

The digital home network handles a plurality of devices using different media such as Ethernet, General Packet Radio Service, Wi-Fi, and USB. DRM/CAS protects content until it reaches the home. The location of this acquisition point within the home network is a tricky issue, known as CA-to-DRM. Content transferred from the acquisition point to other devices needs protection. The first approach is to use link encryption. This is usually done by DTCP. DVB-CPCM proposes a global approach that encompasses the entire home network. Content always stays scrambled within the home network. Descrambling only occurs at rendering and exporting points.

A CPS is a generic term used here for content protection systems that do not deal with the content delivery. It includes PVR storage protection, link protection (DTCP-IP), or any other system local to the home networks. It may also sometimes be seen as a local DRM.

In the late 1990 s, it was foreseen that the preferred bus for home networks would be IEEE1394. By default, IEEE1394 features quality of service (QoS) which is paramount for digital video transmission. This was not the case with Ethernet IP. Slow adoption of IEEE1394 allowed IP to solve the issue and propose QoS. IP is now the undisputed technology of choice for home networks.

In IP protocol, it is possible to define in the header the maximum number of hops, i.e., the number of traversed network devices. Once this value is reached, the corresponding IP packet is automatically discarded.

RTT is a measure of the current transmission delay in a network, found by timing a packet bounced off some remote host. This can be done with the ping command. The restriction uses an average value calculated after several trials.

The revocation of HDCP has never been activated, although many HDCP strippers, i.e., gimmicks that removed HDCP protection, are available on the market.
