Zusammenfassung

Die Anforderungen von Anwendungen an die Performance eines Computernetzes divergieren in Abhängigkeit vieler Parameter. Anwendungen mit Echtzeitkommunikation oder interaktiver Benutzerkommunikation haben andere Anforderungen als E-Mail-Verkehr oder einfache Datentransfer. Anwendungen mit unterschiedlichen Anforderungen an die Performance konkurrieren stets um die zur Verfügung stehenden Ressourcen in einem Computernetz. Um allen Anforderungen an die Performance und damit die erreichbare Dienstgüte (Englisch: Quality of Service) gerecht zu werden, sind Mechanismen vorzusehen, die es erlauben, Verkehr differenziert zu behandeln und entsprechend ihrer Anforderungen im Computernetz weiterzuleiten.
