Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This chapter provides a brief overview of cellular base station design in a given propagation environment. Beginning with the choice of multiple access technique, we will sip through FCC allocated spectrum, frequency planning, and traffic engineering followed by cell site engineering. Finally, we will see how to obtain live air data and perform data analysis for optimization. Details will be presented in the subsequent chapters.
Saleh Faruque
Chapter 2. RF Coverage Planning
Abstract
This chapter presents a brief overview of empirical propagation models and their practical applications along with deployment guidelines. It is shown that all propagation models exhibit equation of straight line within the Fresnel zone break point. A computer-aided design tool is presented as a student project.

Chapter 3. Choice of Multiple Access Technique
Abstract
Multiple access techniques enable many users to share the same spectrum in the frequency domain, time domain, code domain, or phase domain. These techniques are readily available as international standards and can be used to provide cellular services in a given geographical area. This chapter presents a brief overview of the various multiple access techniques available today. Numerous illustrations are used to bring students up-to-date in key concepts, underlying principles and practical applications of FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, and OFDMA. The mode of operation such as fDD and TDD is also presented with illustrations. To illustrate the concept, we present the construction of these radios.

Chapter 4. Frequency Planning
Abstract
In frequency planning, we dole out the channels to the cells, much like a dealer in card game deals out cards from the deck until every player has a set. Beginning with the FCC-allocated frequency band, we show how channels are created and allocated to different cells. Cell reuse plans are described next with C/I. The improvement of channel capacity by means of optimization is also described.

Chapter 5. Traffic Engineering
Abstract
Traffic engineering is a branch of science that deals with provisioning of communication circuits in a given service area, for a given number of subscribers, with a given Grade of Service (GOS). It involves acquisition of population density per cell, translation of population density into traffic data (Erlang) per cell, computing the number of channels per cell using the Erlang table, and estimating the total number of cells in a given geographic area.

Chapter 6. Cell Site Optimization
Abstract
Cell site optimization involves live air data collection as a function of distance and statistical analysis of the data for adjusting RF coverage footprints. This concluding chapter shows how these tools are used to collect live air data and perform statistical analysis to optimize the cell site.
