About this book

This book mainly introduces overview of “Destruction of the North China Craton”, a major research plan of NSFC. It summarizes the scientific ideas, core key scientific issues, scientific research objectives, and models of the major research plan of "Destruction of the North China Craton". From the perspective of major national needs and scientific discipline development, the book focuses on the following aspects: the temporal and spatial distribution range, process, and mechanism of the NCC destruction; the properties, structure, and interaction of materials in different spheres in the earth during craton destruction; the shallow effect of craton destruction; and the control mechanism of mineral resources, energy, and disasters. The book also makes a strategic prospect for the study of global dynamics and improves human understanding of the formation and evolution of continents.

Project Overview
Abstract
The earth’s surface consists of continents and oceans. Continents cover nearly one-third of the earth’s surface and are essential to human survival. More than 95% of the natural resources used by human beings come from continents. Therefore, the formation and evolution of continents have always been the most fundamental scientific issue of solid earth sciences, and it is also the key to solving the problems of national resources and energy demand. People have conducted a long-term exploration in the formation, evolution, internal structure, and control over resources of continents.

Major Research Achievements
Abstract
From the perspective of earth system sciences and based on the analysis technology and detection means of modern earth sciences, the Plan was carried out by Chinese scientists through systematic observations, experiments and theoretical analyses, with an emphasis on the spatio-temporal distribution range and process of the NCC destruction, the interaction and dynamic mechanism of different earth spheres during craton destruction, the resources and biological effects of craton destruction, and the cognitive level of the formation and evolution of continents. Through ten years of research and focusing on core scientific issues, we have successfully completed the predetermined scientific objectives and achieved the following innovative research results.

Outlook
Abstract
Craton destruction belongs to the continental evolution. Continental evolution is an important frontier field of geoscience that cannot be explained by classical plate tectonics theory in many aspects. In recent years, a series of major research plans have been set up to explore the formation and development of continents and try to establish a new theoretical system of continental evolution. The Chinese mainland’s geological conditions richly endowed by nature provide a rare natural laboratory for China’s geoscience community to achieve breakthroughs in geoscience theory.
