Some of the decisive factors in the successful development of electric vehicles include the use of appropriate simulation models and prototype testing. As part of the e-Generation project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF has developed methods and tools for the simulation and experimental testing of electric powertrains, in order to investigate their vibration behaviour and the resulting operating loads. The main objectives were to increase the range of electric vehicles by reducing their energy consumption, to lower production costs and to produce a high-quality product suitable for everyday use. In order to achieve this, a variety of dynamic simulation models with different levels of detail were produced in the form of 1-D or 3-D multi-body simulation models for a selected powertrain concept.
