RSS Cooperative Localization in WSNs Operating in the Millimeter Bands

Abstract

The location information should be embedded with the sensed information, at each sensor, in order to have a meaningful complete data at the control center. The indoor localization mechanisms can include the Received Signal Strength “RSS” that is a simple one but it has a low accuracy. In this letter, the accuracy of the RSS based localization is improved by application of the cooperative mechanism among the sensors. In addition, the virtual anchor selection is combined with the cooperation mechanism in order to simplify the complexity at each sensor. Moreover, the experiment is carried out assuming the millimeter wave frequency bands which are the future trends in wireless communication. The Linear Least Square algorithm is modified to solve the measurement equations in millimeter wave WSNs. The result of the carried out experiment shows that the cooperative RSS localization with virtual anchors selection mechanism, in the proposed millimeter wave WSNs, can provide a very high positioning accuracy level.
