Abstract

Lolium rigidum is the most important herbicide-resistant weed species worldwide. Knowledge about fitness components of herbicide-resistant populations is useful for their management. Germination of four clodinafop-propargyl-resistant (R) and four -susceptible (S) L. rigidum populations were tested under two temperature conditions (22/14 oC and 17/7 oC day/night) and at five sowing depths (0–8 cm). At high temperatures, the maximum germination (Gmax) and time to 50% of Gmax (TG50) for all the S populations were higher and faster than the R populations. At low temperatures, however, germination traits of the S populations were either higher than or equal to the R populations. The maximum seedling emergence (Emax) and time to 50% of Emax (ET50) for the S populations tended to be higher and faster than the R populations across all sowing depths, especially at sowing depths < 3-cm. The Emax was > 82.7% and < 68.8% for the S and R populations at 3‑cm sowing depth. At sowing depths > 3-cm, emergence traits of the S populations were either higher than or equal to the R populations. The principal component analysis separated the S and R populations into distinct groups. Therefore, ceasing clodinafop-propargyl application may increase the chance of the S populations to overcome the R populations.
