Abstract

Tensile strength (TS) of rocks is one of the fundamental parameters in design of civil engineering structures. Limestone rocks are abundant in Iraq, but few researches have been conducted on their strength. Nondestructive and index test was used in this study to investigate the tensile strength of four main limestone formations in Iraq, three of them located in Sulaymaniyah province and one of them in Mosul province. Correlation between Brazilian indirect tensile strength (TS) with each of Schmidt hammer rebound number (RL), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPT) and point load test (PLT) in both dry and saturated soils was examined. Statistical evaluation criteria were root-mean-square-error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), variance accounted for (VAF), logarithmic standard deviation (\(\beta ),\) accuracy ratio (AR) and coefficient of determination (R2). Also, Mann–Whitney statistical test used to compute p-value for the correlations was conducted so as to select the best parameter to predict TS. Results of this study showed that the RL is the best parameter to predict TS in dry case, while both RL and PLT are the two significant parameters for predicting the TS of limestone rocks in saturated condition.
