Abstract

Born in July 1890 to a family of medical doctors in Mie Prefecture, Yoshikazu Segi graduated from the Aichi Medical College in Nagoya in June 1915, just a few days before he turned 25. Segi had several career choices. According to Shuhei Ikai, most of the graduates of medical colleges in the 1910s engaged in private practice (kaigyo-i) even if hospitals, medical schools, and the army offered them positions. However, the private-practice market tended to become increasingly competitive—especially in large cities—as more and more young doctors graduated from the prestigious imperial universities of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kyushu.
