Four books mark the beginning of what we can call contemporary political theory and the explicit injection of the rational choice or individualistic paradigm into the discipline of political science: Anthony Downs’s An Economic Theory of Democracy (1957), William Riker’s Theory of Political Coalitions (1962), James Buchanan and Tullock’s Calculus of Consent (1962), and Mancur Olson’s Logic of Collective Action (1965). There were, of course, other seminal volumes of the period that had a profound impact on how we viewed and studied politics, such as Kenneth Arrow’s Social Choice and Individual Values (1951) and Duncan Black’s Theory of Committees and Elections (1958).
