About this book

Innovation research has investigated the relevance of innovations for organizational competitiveness and the role of innovations for social as well as economic welfare. Accordingly, scholars and practitioners frequently emphasize the innovation processes that lead to desired innovative outcomes. Nevertheless, these innovation processes have to be carried out by motivated individuals. Increasingly, academic literature takes the mindsets of these actors into consideration. However, diverging conceptualizations limit our understanding of the term "mindset" and the role of individuals’ mindsets in organizational innovation efforts. This book aims at opening the “black box” of innovation as a mindset. Linking mindset theories from social psychology to the context of frugal innovation, the author provides rigorous conceptual work on mindsets in innovation. This conceptual research is supported by findings from two empirical studies. This book makes important contributions to theory and practice: to academic research by developing conceptual clarity on understanding innovation as a mindset and providing supportive empirical evidence, and to innovation practice by showing how a detailed understanding of individuals’ mindsets can inform evidence-based change interventions.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This book aims at opening the “black box” of innovation as a mindset. Linking mindset theories from social psychology to the context of frugal innovation, this book provides rigorous conceptual work on mindsets in innovation efforts. This conceptual research is supported by findings from two empirical studies, and thereby makes important contributions to theory and practice: to academic research by developing conceptual clarity on understanding innovation as a mindset and providing supportive empirical evidence, and to innovation practice by showing how a detailed understanding of individuals’ mindsets can inform evidence-based change interventions.

Chapter 2. Conceptual and Theoretical Foundation
Abstract
In this chapter, I develop the conceptual foundations of this thesis and my overall research design, which builds on a qualitative pre-study and a quantitative main study. I therefore follow an exploratory sequential mixed methods approach (Creswell & Creswell, 2017). Central to my investigation are mindsets, their role in human functioning, and, consequently, important innovation management-related considerations.

Chapter 3. Action Research Study
Abstract
In this chapter of the thesis, I will provide qualitative insights on the complexity of innovative behavior among different stakeholders in an innovation process aiming to develop frugal outcomes. Furthermore, I will analyze how this behavior is related to what I discussed as the deliberative frugal mindset and the implemental frugal mindset (Krohn & Herstatt, 2019) in Chapter 2.

Chapter 4. Main Study Path Model
Abstract
In this chapter, I discuss detailed methodological considerations for the preparation of a quantitative study and present the specification of structural and measurement models. Data collection, statistical analysis, and findings of the quantitative study are discussed in Chapter 5.
Malte Krohn
Chapter 5. Main Study Findings
Abstract
This chapter presents the process and findings of a quantitative study building on the path model developed in Chapter 4. To test my research hypotheses, valid and representative data is required. The process of identifying, collecting, and examining a suitable sample of responses is presented in the next section. Identifying and contacting 886 individuals in 110 innovative German companies resulted in a final data set of 117 usable responses. Consequently, I present my descriptive findings and discuss first important insights.

Chapter 6. Discussion
Abstract
In this chapter, I integrate the findings of my two studies and discuss them in context with previous research in the field of innovation management and related fields. This thesis’s overall research objective is to provide more conceptual clarity on the notion of innovation as a mindset and substantiate this conceptual work with empirical findings. Therefore, I selected FI and the role of a frugal mindset as my socio-economic research context and explicated four research questions, which will be addressed in the remainder of this chapter.

Chapter 7. Conclusion
Abstract
In this final chapter, I summarize my contribution to academic research in the field of innovation management, FI research in particular, and to the fields of mindset and intention research. Moreover, I derive implications from my two studies for innovation management practice. Lastly, I discuss methodological limitations that should be considered when interpreting my findings.
