Excerpt

Forty years of teaching in higher education may qualify me more to write about what has passed us by rather than to pontificate too much about what should happen next in the evolution of an institution that remains remarkably resilient to the mounting pressures of economic and cultural change. Over a half century ago, turmoil emerged about free speech and student protest directly tied to the coming of age of the Baby Boomers and to the Vietnam War. It was a time when thoughtfully pessimistic writing about the university appeared, notably, Robert Nisbet’s The Degradation of the Academic Dogma (1971) and Philip Rieff’s Fellow Teachers (1972). In both works, the authors responded viscerally to the student upheavals and the coming of the multiversity, a confluence and coincidence of forces that has radically diminished faculty authority over the conduct of higher education. …

Gellner added a footnote: “In America, a variant of this doctrine has now assumed a very specific form: the ghetto has replaced the log cabin as the point of origin which legitimates the ideas of its possessor. The ‘problem of consciousness’ is, for the moment, ignored, for there is an opportunist alliance between the oppressed ethnic minorities, yearning for respect, affluence and respectability, and the activists, sated with affluence and respectability, and yearning for épatement. (As for the white workers, no one even expects them to be revolutionary -- they appear to be lost to consciousness for good.” (Ernest Gellner, “The Panther and the Dove: Reflections on Rebelliousness and Its Milieux” In David Martin, ed., Anarchy and Culture: The Problem of the Contemporary University (New York: Columbia University Press, 1969), p. 140.) The “basket of deplorables” is the update on who is lost to consciousness.
