The benefits of open-source software have been obvious to tens of thousands of developers for a long time. It is less expensive than proprietary software and benefits from large communities of developers who strive to make it better. The Linux open-source operating system is widely used in infotainment but not at all in automotive safety-critical systems, with the exception of Tesla, whose full-self- driving system runs on Linux, according to reports. "It's public knowledge that they have been using Linux for years," said Shuah Khan, a Linux Foundation Fellow and chair of the ELISA Technical Steering Committee. The ELISA (Enabling Linux in Safety Applications) project is an open-source initiative that aims to create a shared set of tools and processes to help companies build and certify Linux-based safety-critical applications. …
