Abstract

This paper discusses the role of station topologies for operation of a non-traditional railway system using stochastic demands instead of fixed timetables. The concept and basic principles of such an on-demand people mover system have been outlined in [1], especially the system of systems (SoS) perspective and nature of this concept. To support the implementation of this concept and aid the analyses, constructional and operational rules for defining the topology and properties of tracks and associated signalling and interlocking systems were stated. In order to be able to define those rules, generic definitions and models were created for each track component and their composition into complete tracks.
This paper focusses on train stations as one of the major components of a people mover SoS. In particular, the impact of different station layouts on safety and availability is considered. Taking into account the differences between on-demand people mover and traditional railway systems, a classification of station layouts is presented in order to facilitate the construction of tracks that fulfil operational requirements. All considerations herein are backed by a research project, which was publicly funded by the MA23 (MA23 is the research funding department of the magistrate of the city of Vienna.).
