When television first began, the verb ‘to broadcast’ was adopted to express the idea of scattered, undefined, anonymous dissemination of information on radio waves. In technological terms, ‘broadcasting’ evolved from prior technologies such as the telephone and wireless (radio), electro-mechanical then electronic television at the beginning of the 20th century. The Internet and the digital world are changing both dimensions of our understanding of television.
