Abstract

In this chapter the thermodynamic theory behind damage mechanics is presented. The presented damage evolution model is purely physical, rather than empirical. Entropy production rate is used as a damage metric. It is shown that when entropy production rate is used as a damage metric, damage due to numerous related and unrelated external and internal sources can be combined into a single universal damage term, which is not possible with any phenomenological damage evolution model.
