It is now almost a cliché that Václav Havel has had a stranger-than-fiction life. In the 1970s and 80s Havel was the hip Bohemian dissident who organized Charter 77 to defend the artistic freedom rock & rollers, The Plastic People of the Universe, against the politically repressive and culturally ischemic Czechoslovakian communist government. The cultural left in the West admired Havel as a supporter of universal human rights and an avant-garde playwright who won two Obie awards for plays in the tradition of Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco’s theater of the absurd. …
