The act of forming an alliance implies a need to be stronger in unison and that there is some common agreement between the parties — they have shared goals for instance. In the commercial world, however, this simple definition needs to be broadened as alliances are created for many reasons, some of which are anti-competitive. In this chapter, we concentrate on alliances that cross national boundaries, and are (presumably) set up to be of benefit to each party so as to increase their reach in one or more aspects of their joint business: specifically they will be alliances in mainland China, located in the southwest region.
